Thriving as a Mom and Adult with ADHD: Unmedicated and Coping with Years of Learned Mechanisms

Being a mom is already an exhilarating and challenging journey, and when you add Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) into the mix, it can bring its own unique set of experiences. I have been living with ADHD since I was diagnosed at the tender age of seven. Throughout the years, I have learned to navigate life unmedicated, relying on coping mechanisms that have helped me embrace my strengths and overcome challenges. In this blog post, I want to share my story as a mom and adult with ADHD, shedding light on the importance of finding a community of like-minded individuals who truly understand.



Embracing Life with ADHD:

ADHD is more than just a diagnosis; it's a different way of experiencing the world. For me, it means having a mind that is constantly buzzing with thoughts, ideas, and a sense of endless curiosity. It's about having a hyperfocus that allows me to immerse myself fully in a task or topic of interest. However, it also means grappling with impulsivity, forgetfulness, and difficulties with time management, organization, and planning.

Growing up with ADHD and learning coping mechanisms from an early age has been instrumental in helping me navigate the challenges of adulthood. I discovered that creating structure and routines helps me stay organized and on track. Using visual aids, such as calendars, to-do lists, and reminders, has been invaluable in managing my responsibilities as a mom and adult. I also learned the importance of breaking tasks down into smaller, more manageable steps, as it helps me maintain focus and stay motivated.


The Power of Finding Your Tribe:

One of the most significant discoveries on my journey has been the importance of finding a community of individuals who share similar experiences with ADHD. Connecting with people who truly understand the quirks, challenges, and strengths of living with ADHD has been incredibly empowering.

Having a supportive network of like-minded individuals not only provides a safe space for sharing stories and experiences, but it also offers practical advice, coping strategies, and a sense of validation. When you meet others who have faced similar struggles, it reaffirms that you are not alone in your journey. This sense of belonging can boost self-esteem, reduce feelings of isolation, and inspire personal growth.

Seeking out support groups, both online and offline, can be a great way to connect with fellow moms and adults with ADHD. These communities often provide a wealth of knowledge, resources, and a platform to ask questions and seek advice. Sharing successes, challenges, and even humorous anecdotes can help foster a sense of camaraderie and mutual understanding.



Embracing Your Strengths:

While living with ADHD certainly presents its share of challenges, it is essential to recognize and embrace the strengths that come along with it. ADHD individuals often possess a unique blend of creativity, out-of-the-box thinking, and the ability to hyperfocus on tasks that capture their interest. These attributes can be incredibly advantageous as a mom and adult.

As a mom with ADHD, my ability to think creatively allows me to come up with innovative solutions to everyday challenges. Hyperfocus enables me to engage fully with my children during playtime or when helping them with their schoolwork. By capitalizing on these strengths, I can create a positive and nurturing environment for my family.




Living as a mom and adult with ADHD has its ups and downs, but it is also filled with moments of joy, discovery, and personal growth. Coping unmedicated has been possible for me due to the coping mechanisms I learned during my childhood. Most importantly, finding a community of like-minded individuals who truly understand has made a significant difference in my journey.
